In this post, I’m going to break down the steps to improving your golf swing mechanics. Just like with anything else, it’s a lot easier to get better at golf if you work on one thing at a time.

Simple Golf Swing Mechanics
Unless you’re a professional golfer and playing five times a week, I highly suggest you keep it simple when playing golf. The more complicated you make things, the more practice you’re going to need to perfect your skills.
You don’t want to be bogged down with a ton of information when you’re playing. If you’re not playing everyday, you don’t have enough time to put a crazy amount of information into your muscle memory. That’s why I highly suggest you keep it simple and work on only a couple basic things at a time. If you perfect the basics of golf, you will have a great time playing and there’s no doubt you will be a very good player.
Set It Up
When you set up your stance, stand with your feet about shoulder width apart. The ball should be right in the middle of your feet and obviously in front of you. Keep your back straight and your chest out. Also keep your knees in an almost-locked position.
The next thing to do is hold the club out in front of you so it’s perpendicular to your body. Keeping that arm and back position, bend your hips until the club touches the ground. That is your basic set up. Play a round or go to the driving range while practicing only the setup until you feel you have mastered it.
Alignment and Timing
To align yourself, stand behind the ball and find something that catches your eye in the grass that’s a couple feet ahead of you. Use that object as a point of reference to align your feet and aim the club. This trick will help you immensely with hitting the ball in the right direction.
With timing, the only way to improve it is through practice and repetition. Make sure you don’t hold the club too tightly throughout the swing, and focus on making solid contact every time you hit the ball. The next time you play, focus on your alignment and timing, not forgetting what you worked on with your set up.
Correct Golf Swing Mechanics
The first part of the actual golf swing is of course the back swing. Make sure to turn your shoulder, swing your arms back, and rotate your chest all at the same exact time. It is VERY important to keep your elbows locked throughout your entire swing. Stop your back swing and all your movement when your left arm is parallel to the ground.

On your down stroke, focus on keeping your back straight and rotating your shoulders around your spine. Make sure to also keep your head straight. For a powerful swing, make sure to rotate your hands in the middle of the swing and use the momentum that naturally is caused by your moving wrists.
Practicing by focusing on these golf swing mechanics will drastically increase your distance and will have you playing from the fairway.
